What is BMI?
BMI = weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Example: 68 kg at 1.68 m gives 68 ÷ (1.68 × 1.68) = 24.1. In pounds and inches: 703 × weight (lb) ÷ height (in)².

What BMI does not know
BMI cannot tell muscle from fat and says nothing about where fat sits. Athletic people with a lot of muscle often land in the overweight range without having much body fat. Waist size is a useful second measure. For children and teenagers, BMI is compared with percentile charts by age and sex, not this table.
Questions
What is a healthy BMI?
For adults, the WHO counts a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 as a healthy weight. From 25 it is overweight, from 30 obesity.
How do I work out my BMI?
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. At 75 kg and 1.80 m that is 75 ÷ 3.24 = 23.1.
Does BMI apply to children?
Not with these limits. For children and teenagers, BMI is compared with percentile curves by age and sex.
Is BMI meaningful for athletes?
Only partly. Muscle is denser than fat, so trained people often have a high BMI with little body fat.
